Warwick Arts Centre at Warwick University
Based on a 290 hectare out-of-town campus with easy access to a wide range of restaurants and a supermarket on site, Warwick Arts Centre is just over an hour from London Euston and fifteen minutes from Birmingham Airport by fast train. BFS delegates will enjoy free access to the sports centre and swimming pool as well as a contemporary sculpture trail, nature trail, gardens, wood and two lakes. Parking is free for anyone attending the Convention in any of the allocated car parks (see BFS website for details). A choice of accommodation is available ranging from single student standard accommodation with shared bathroom facilities to single student ensuite accommodation and breakfast is included.

Music with Friends
This year’s theme is Music with Friends, and there will be plenty of opportunities to participate and make new friends, both musically and socially. Lisa Nelsen and the Metzger Ensemble will be holding two flute quartet workshops, to allow convention delegates the opportunity to play alongside a professional ensemble. Quintessenz will be holding a flute ensemble masterclass, for established ensembles and for audience members to form new ad hoc groups. Look out, too, for Atarah’s flute choir with soloists rehearsal and concert, where you can play alongside some of the convention artists. No convention would be complete without a dazzling array of headline artists, and this year is no exception; we are looking forward to recitals by Adam Walker, Katherine Bryan, Peter Verhoyen, Jean-Louis Beaumadier, Marina Piccinini, Quintessenz, Robert Dick, Sergio Pallottelli, Hallfríður Ólafsdóttir, Joel Tse, Jean Michel Tanguy, Nicole Esposito, Tempest, William Bennett and Trevor Wye amongst others.

Something for all
As usual, there will be a wide range of recitals, workshops, foyer performances, flute choirs and masterclasses. There will be two themed days; Friday will feature events aimed at continuing professional development for teachers, including talks on beginner methods, Diplomas, CME and digital technology. Saturday is our Early Music day, with performances and workshops from Rachel Brown, Boaz Berney, the Renaissance flute quartet Modena Consort, and Elizabeth Walker. Throughout the weekend, there will be contemporary music offerings from Robert Dick, Tilmann Dehnhard and our four featured composers, Violeta Dinescu, Sophie Dufeutrelle, Katherine Hoover and Mike Mower.  There will also be plenty of opportunities to hear low flutes and piccolos, and flute players’ well-being will be represented through classes on the Feldenkrais method, posture and yoga.

Trade Hall
With a wide array of instruments to try and new repertoire to explore the trade hall promises to be unmissable. Exhibitors will include flute shops, flute makers, accessories, instrument repairs, insurance companies and with many well-known companies are already signed up to exhibit. The trade will be based in the Mead Gallery, a purpose built art gallery space located on the first floor of the Art Centre. For further information about booking a trade table at the event click here (closing date for trade bookings is 23 May).

And the winner of our Beaumont Music flute case competition is... Sonia England!

We recently ran a fantastic flutey give-away on our Facebook Page, courtesy of our lovely friends at Beaumont Music. It was a chance to win one of their fabulous oversized pencil cases flute cases. The winner could choose from the 8 designs available, and we threw in a cleaning cloth too.

So, as you can see, we literally drew the name of the winner out of a hat (a woolen hat of some description, as it happens) and the name we drew out was Sonia England, so very well done to her and many congratulations!
